Before a wedding, a new business, a housewarming or even a child's first lesson, Indian families say the same name first: Ganesha. Two stories, told for generations, explain why.
The story of his birth
As the tradition is told, Goddess Parvati fashioned a boy from sandalwood paste and gave him life, asking him to guard her door while she bathed. When Lord Shiva returned, the boy — who knew only his mother's command — would not let him pass. In the conflict that followed, the boy lost his head. Parvati's grief was so great that Shiva promised to restore him, and he did, with the head of an elephant. Shiva then blessed the boy: he would be honoured before all others, and every new beginning would start with his name.

The race around the world
In another well-loved tale, Shiva and Parvati set their two sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya, a contest: whoever circled the world first would be honoured. Kartikeya set off at once on his peacock. Ganesha, on his small mouse, simply walked around his parents and said that they were his whole world. Pleased by his wisdom and devotion, they declared him the winner.
What the stories teach
Devotion and understanding matter more than speed. To honour your parents, your teachers and your origins is to honour the world itself.
Welcome him home
