Janmashtami Decoration at Home: Laddu Gopal, Jhula and Krishna Idols
by TOHFA · 9 Oct 2026
Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Krishna, and many homes mark it with a midnight puja, songs, fasting and a decorated space for the child Krishna. You do not need elaborate decor. A few well-chosen pieces make the corner feel festive.
Laddu Gopal, the child form
Many families keep a Laddu Gopal and look after him like a child, bathing, dressing and offering him food. On Janmashtami, he is the centre of the day. A small brass Laddu Gopal is the most common choice.
A jhula for the swing
A decorated swing is a central part of the celebration. A small brass or wooden jhula for Laddu Gopal can be decorated with flowers, and a Radha Krishna jhula idol is a nice piece to display.
Bal Gopal with makhan
The child Krishna with butter is a favourite image. A brass Bal Gopal with makhan reminds children of the butter-thief stories.
Krishna idols for the mandir
A standing Lord Krishna idol or Krishna with a cow suits the main puja space.
Simple decor ideas
Use fresh flowers, a peacock feather, a flute and rangoli of small footprints leading to the mandir. Light brass diyas around the corner for the evening.
The midnight puja
Many families wake at midnight, the traditional time of birth, bathe the idol, offer panchamrit and butter and sing an aarti. Confirm the timing with a panchang or your temple, as customs differ.
