Durga Idol at Home: Placement, Navratri Kalash and Daily Worship

Durga is worshipped as the Divine Mother who destroys evil, and for many families her idol is the focus of Navratri. Whether you keep her through the year or only for the nine nights, a few simple points help.
Placement
Place the idol on a raised, clean seat in the puja room, with a cloth under it. Many families face east or north while praying. The idol should be at a comfortable height, not on the floor.
The Navratri kalash
On the first day, many families set up a kalash, a pot of water topped with mango leaves and a coconut, near the idol. Some sow barley in a small dish as well. Procedures vary, so ask your priest or family elders for the right method and the correct time for ghatasthapana.
A lamp for the nine nights
Some households keep a lamp burning through the nine nights. If you do, use a stable brass lamp and make sure it is placed safely, away from curtains and children.
Daily worship
Light the lamp, offer red flowers and a sweet, recite your usual stotra or a few lines of the Durga Chalisa and finish with an aarti. Even five minutes a day is enough.
Choosing the idol
A 4 inch brass Durga is a good size for most mandirs, and a small 2 inch Durga fits a compact space. A Durga on a shank or a conch is a more ornate display. Pocket temples and photo frames of Ambe Ma are light and portable.
After Navratri
A brass idol stays in the puja room through the year. Wipe it clean and cover it lightly if you are away.
