Ghee Diya or Oil Diya: Which Is Better for Daily Puja?

Walk into different homes and you will see different lamps lit: ghee in one, sesame oil in another, mustard oil in a third. All of them are acceptable, and the choice usually follows family and regional practice.
Ghee
A ghee lamp is considered the most auspicious for the main puja in many traditions, and is usually lit in front of the deity in the morning and evening. Its flame is soft and clean, and it burns with little smoke.
Sesame oil
Sesame, or til, oil is widely used in South India and is associated with Shani and with ancestor rites in some traditions. It gives a steady flame.
Mustard oil
Mustard oil is common in North India, especially for diyas at the entrance and on festivals like Diwali. Many people use it for the larger number of diyas, as it is easier on the budget.
Wicks
Cotton wicks, rolled by hand or bought ready-made, are standard. Long wicks give a larger flame, and shorter ones burn gently.
Which should you choose?
Follow your family's custom. If you have none, ghee for the main lamp and oil for the extra diyas is a good, common arrangement.
Keeping a brass diya clean
Wipe off oil residue while the diya is still lukewarm, using a soft cloth. Wash it with mild soap and water now and then, and dry it thoroughly. Brass will darken with use, which is natural, and a little polish brings it back to a shine.
Safety
Place the diya on a stable surface, never leave it unattended and keep it away from curtains and children.
