Vijayadashami Explained: Why Dussehra Celebrates Both Ram and Durga
by TOHFA · 4 Oct 2026
Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, falls on the tenth day after Navratri begins. The word means the victory on the tenth day, and across India it is the festival of good winning over evil. What changes from region to region is whose victory is remembered.
In the North: Ram and Ravana
In much of North India the day remembers Ram defeating the ten-headed king Ravana, who had taken Sita. Ramlila, the staged retelling of the Ramayana, runs for days beforehand and ends on Dussehra, when tall effigies of Ravana are burned at dusk. Twenty days later, Ram's return to Ayodhya is celebrated as Diwali.
In the East: Durga and Mahishasura
In Bengal and much of the East, the same day marks the end of Durga Puja. The goddess is remembered as having defeated the buffalo demon Mahishasura after nine nights, and on Dashami her idols are taken in procession and immersed.
Two stories, one idea
The two stories are different, but the lesson is the same: power used without dharma is defeated, and courage joined with righteousness wins. Neither version cancels the other. Many families honour both, with Durga during the nine nights and Ram on the tenth day.
