Explaining Diwali to Children: Stories and Activities
by TOHFA · 4 Oct 2026
Children remember a festival through its stories and through what they were allowed to do. A few simple ideas can turn Diwali from a busy day for adults into something the whole family shares.
The story, simply told
Ram's return. Ram, Sita and Lakshman had been away in the forest for fourteen years. When they returned to Ayodhya, the people lit lamps along the path so that they could find their way home.
Lakshmi's visit. On Diwali night, people say that Lakshmi visits clean, well-lit homes, so we tidy up and light lamps to welcome her.
Krishna and Narakasura. The day before Diwali remembers Krishna defeating a demon who troubled the people.
Keep it short and let them ask questions. The central idea is easy for a child: light is stronger than darkness, and kindness wins.
Activities for children
Paint a diya. Plain clay diyas can be painted in bright colours days in advance.

Make a rangoli. Even a simple pattern in coloured rice or flower petals at the door is a joy.
Help with the thali. Let them arrange the flowers, the sweets and the kumkum on the plate.
Say the aarti. Give them a small bell and let them join in.
Safety
Keep children away from open flames and fireworks unless an adult is watching them closely, and keep lit lamps on a high or stable surface.
