Most people think of Diwali as one evening of lamps. In much of India it is a five-day festival, and each day has its own meaning. Customs differ by region and family, so treat this as a guide to the common thread rather than a rulebook.
Day 1: Dhanteras
The festival opens on the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight. It is associated with Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, with Lakshmi and with Kuber, the keeper of wealth. It is a traditional day to buy something new in metal, such as a utensil, a lamp or an idol. A Kuber idol or a brass lota is a natural fit.
Day 2: Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali)
This day remembers the defeat of the demon Narakasura, and many families light lamps at dawn or in the evening to mark it. A pair of small brass diyas by the door is enough.
Day 3: Diwali and Lakshmi Puja
The main night, on the new moon. Homes are cleaned, doors are decorated, and Lakshmi and Ganesha are worshipped together in the evening, with lamps lit all around the house. If you only have time to prepare for one day, prepare for this one. Our separate guide covers the puja step by step.

Day 4: Govardhan Puja
Observed in many regions the day after Diwali, it remembers how Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan to shelter the people of Vrindavan. In some places a large offering of food, called Annakut, is arranged before the deity. A Krishna with cow idol belongs on this day.
Day 5: Bhai Dooj
Sisters apply a tilak to their brothers and pray for their well-being, and brothers give a gift in return. It is a good day for a small, thoughtful present.
Brass through the five days
Brass is the traditional metal of the puja room because it lasts for generations, can be polished back to a shine and looks right beside a lit lamp. You do not need a piece for every day. One idol for the mandir, a pair of diyas and a lota for the thali covers most households.
Check a panchang for the exact timings in your city, as the dates and the auspicious window change every year.
