In one of the oldest forms of Lakshmi, known as Gajalakshmi, the goddess sits on a lotus while two elephants lift water pots and pour them over her. It is a picture often found at the doorways of homes and temples across India.
Why elephants
In Indian tradition the elephant (gaj) is a symbol of royal dignity, strength and plenty. Elephants are also linked with the monsoon clouds that water the land. When two elephants honour Lakshmi, they show that prosperity is strong, steady and generous — like the rains.
What the image teaches
Wealth in this image is honoured, but it is also calm. Lakshmi sits serene on her lotus while the elephants serve her. It reminds us that power and fortune are meant to be held with grace.

The elephant in the home
For this reason, elephant figures are a traditional and auspicious gift, especially at Diwali, housewarmings and weddings. They are often placed in pairs, facing the entrance.
In brass
We make the tradition into everyday objects. The Gajraj Diya Pair (Premium) is a handcrafted pair of brass diyas that carries the elephant motif into the evening aarti. The Elephant Diya (2 to 2.5 inch) is a smaller, giftable piece for a puja thali, and our Elephant Decor is a statement for a shelf or a console.
Light one before Lakshmi at Diwali, and let it become part of your family's yearly ritual.
