Ganesh Chaturthi is the birthday of Ganesha, observed for a day or up to eleven days, depending on the family. Bringing a Ganesha idol home is a joyful event. A few practical points help you make a good choice.
Choosing the idol
Traditionally, many households bring a clay idol for the festival and immerse it at the end. Others keep a permanent idol of brass or another metal, which stays in the mandir through the year. Both are valid, and it depends on your family's custom.
Size
Choose a size that fits the space where it will sit, with room around it for lamps and flowers. A 3 to 6 inch idol suits most mandir shelves. A larger idol suits a dedicated stand.
Forms to consider
Ganesha on a lotus, Ganesha seated on an asan, a Dangru Ganesha with a detailed face and a Panchmukhi Ganesha each have a different look and meaning. Pick the one that appeals to your family.
Where to place it
Place the idol in a clean spot, preferably on a raised seat with a cloth. Many families prefer the north-east of the home. Do not place it directly on the floor or facing a bathroom wall.
Offerings
Modak is the traditional sweet, together with durva grass, red flowers, incense and a lamp. Light the lamp morning and evening and perform the aarti.
A lasting alternative
If you prefer not to immerse an idol, a brass Ganesha can be worshipped for the festival days and kept in the puja room afterwards. A small pocket temple is also useful for the car or the desk.
