Holi and Radha Krishna: Holika Dahan, Colours and the Braj Tradition
by TOHFA · 4 Oct 2026
Holi is the festival of colours, held at the full moon in the month of Phalguna, in March. Behind the fun are two old stories, and both are worth knowing.
Holika Dahan
The night before the colours, bonfires are lit. They remember Prahlad, the young devotee of Vishnu, whose father, King Hiranyakashipu, wished him harm. His aunt Holika, who was said to be protected from fire, sat in a blaze with him on her lap, but it was Holika who burned and Prahlad who was saved. The fire stands for the triumph of devotion over arrogance.
The colours of Krishna
The second story is about Krishna and Radha. According to tradition, the young Krishna, who had a dark complexion, worried that the fair Radha would not accept him. His mother Yashoda teasingly told him to colour Radha's face as he liked, and so began the play of colours.
Braj Holi
In Braj, the land of Krishna's childhood around Mathura and Vrindavan, Holi is celebrated for days. In Barsana, the Lathmar Holi has women playfully chasing men with sticks, and in Vrindavan the temples are full of flowers and colour.
