Diwali looks different depending on where you are. The lamps are common to all, but the stories and customs vary. Here are a few of the traditions you will find, though this is only a sample and families differ even within a region.
North India: Ram's return
In much of the north, Diwali remembers Ram returning to Ayodhya after fourteen years in exile. Homes are lit with lamps, and Lakshmi Puja is performed on the main night.
Bengal: Kali Puja
In Bengal and parts of the East, the new-moon night of Diwali is the night of Kali Puja, when the goddess Kali is worshipped, often late at night.
Gujarat: the New Year
In Gujarat, the day after Diwali is Bestu Varas, the start of the new year, when people visit family and greet each other. Traders also worship their new account books on the main night.
Maharashtra: Vasu Baras and Padwa

The festival begins with Vasu Baras, when cows and calves are honoured, and a day later Padwa is celebrated, with husbands and wives exchanging gifts.
The South and Goa: Naraka Chaturdashi
In the South, the day before the main night is the one that matters most. People wake before sunrise for an oil bath and put on new clothes to mark Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura. In Goa, tall effigies of Narakasura are paraded and burned before dawn.
Jain and Sikh traditions
For Jains, Diwali marks the nirvana of Mahavira. For Sikhs, the season is Bandi Chhor Divas, remembering the release of Guru Hargobind from imprisonment, and the Golden Temple is lit up.
