How to Do Lakshmi Puja at Home on Diwali Evening: A Simple Step-by-Step
by TOHFA · 4 Oct 2026
Lakshmi Puja is the heart of Diwali. It does not need to be elaborate. This is a common home outline; your family or priest may follow a different order, and that is perfectly fine.
Before the evening
Clean the house, especially the entrance and the puja corner, and make a rangoli at the door. Many families wash or polish their brass idols and lamps a few days earlier. Choose a spot for the puja and cover it with a clean cloth. Check a panchang for the auspicious window in your city, which is usually in the evening after sunset.
What you will need
An idol or picture of Lakshmi and Ganesha, together
A kalash or lota filled with water, with mango leaves and a coconut on top
Diyas, as many as you like, with ghee or oil and wicks
Flowers (the lotus is Lakshmi's own), rice, kumkum, incense
