Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal: India's Winter Harvest Festivals

In the middle of January, as the days begin to lengthen, large parts of India celebrate the sun and the winter harvest. The names and customs are different but the spirit is shared: gratitude for the harvest and a welcome to the returning sun.
Lohri
Celebrated on the evening before Makar Sankranti, mainly in Punjab and neighbouring states, Lohri is marked with a bonfire. People gather around it, offer sesame, jaggery, popcorn and peanuts, sing and dance. It is also a festive occasion for families with a newborn or a newly married couple.
Makar Sankranti
Usually on 14 January (occasionally the 15th), the day marks the sun's move into Capricorn, known as Makara in the Indian calendar. It is a day for a holy dip, for charity, and for foods made with til (sesame) and gud (jaggery). In Gujarat, the sky fills with kites, and in Maharashtra people exchange sweets with the greeting "til gud ghya, god god bola".
Pongal
In Tamil Nadu, Pongal runs for four days. On the main day, Thai Pongal, rice is boiled with milk in a new pot until it overflows, a sign of abundance. The third day, Mattu Pongal, honours the cattle that work the fields.
