Maha Shivratri, the Great Night of Shiva, falls on the fourteenth night of the dark fortnight in the month of Phalguna, usually in February or March. It is among the most widely observed festivals of Shiva. Traditions differ, and this is a general account.
What the night means
Devotees remember Shiva in many ways on this night. In some traditions it marks the wedding of Shiva and Parvati, and in others it is the night of Shiva's cosmic dance. For many it is above all a night for turning inward.
What devotees do
Fast. Many keep a fast through the day, some without food and some with fruit and milk.
Stay awake. A night vigil, with chanting of Om Namah Shivaya and bhajans, is common.
Abhishek. The Shivling is bathed with water, milk, honey and other offerings, and bilva leaves are placed on it.
Visit a temple. Shiva temples are busy from dawn.
