The Nine Forms of Durga: A Day-by-Day Guide to Navratri

Navratri means nine nights, and each of the nine is dedicated to one form of the goddess, together known as the Navadurga. Traditions vary in the details, but the order below is the one most widely followed.
The nine forms
1. Shailputri, the daughter of the mountain, the first form and the beginning of the festival.
2. Brahmacharini, who stands for devotion and disciplined effort.
3. Chandraghanta, who carries a crescent moon shaped like a bell on her forehead and is a protector.
4. Kushmanda, remembered as the creator of the universe with her smile.
5. Skandamata, the mother of Skanda (Kartikeya).
6. Katyayani, the warrior form associated with the defeat of Mahishasura.
7. Kalaratri, the fierce form that destroys fear and darkness.
8. Mahagauri, the serene, fair form, often marked with kanya pujan on this day.
