Shiv Parivaar and Ardhanarishvara: The Divine Family and the Unity of Shiva and Shakti

Among all the images in Indian devotion, two speak most gently about togetherness: the Shiv Parivaar and Ardhanarishvara.

The Shiv Parivaar

The Shiv Parivaar shows Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and their sons Ganesha and Kartikeya. It is a family that holds opposites in harmony. Shiva is the ascetic of the mountains; Parvati the mother of the household. Ganesha rides a small mouse and Kartikeya a peacock. Yet they live together in peace, and this is why the image is placed in homes — as a blessing for harmony between family members.

Ardhanarishvara

Ardhanarishvara is a single form that is half Shiva and half Parvati. As the tradition is told, it expresses that Shiva and Shakti — consciousness and energy, the masculine and feminine principles — are inseparable. Neither is complete without the other, and the universe exists through their union.

What they teach

A household flourishes when its members complete one another instead of competing. Strength and tenderness, discipline and care, belong together.
