For many families, Diwali is not the end of the season. A series of observances through the month of Kartik continues the lighting of lamps.
Prabodhini (Dev Uthani) Ekadashi
According to tradition, Vishnu sleeps for four months of the monsoon and wakes on this Ekadashi, about ten to twelve days after Diwali. It is considered the end of the period when weddings are avoided, and the wedding season begins soon after.
Tulsi Vivah
From this day, many households celebrate the ceremonial marriage of the tulsi plant to Vishnu, in the form of Shaligram or Krishna. The tulsi is decorated like a bride, with a red cloth and bangles, and a lamp is lit in front of it. It is observed on that day or on a later day up to Kartik Purnima, and customs differ.
Kartik Purnima and Dev Diwali
On the full moon of Kartik, Dev Diwali, the Diwali of the gods, is celebrated, most famously in Varanasi, where thousands of lamps are lit along the ghats of the Ganga. It is also the day Sikhs celebrate Guru Nanak's birth.

Many families light a lamp every evening through Kartik, at the tulsi and in front of the deity. It is a gentle practice.
