Vastu for a Ganesha Idol at Home: Direction and Placement Guide

Ganesha is worshipped first in almost every Hindu ritual, and many homes keep an idol near the entrance or in the mandir. Vastu is a traditional system with many schools, and advice varies. These are the guidelines that are most commonly followed, offered as a guide and not a rule.
Direction
Many Vastu sources suggest the north-east corner of the home, or the north, for the puja space. The idol is commonly placed so that the person praying faces east or north. If your home does not allow this, a clean, quiet and uplifted spot is more important than a precise direction.
Height
Place the idol on a raised surface, such as a shelf or a small platform, and not directly on the floor. It should be at or just above the level of the chest when you stand in front of it.
Entrance
A small Ganesha at or near the main door is a common practice, as he is the guardian of beginnings. In some traditions, a Ganesha facing in and one facing out are placed back to back. This is a custom in some regions only.
What to avoid
Avoid keeping the idol in the bedroom, near a bathroom wall, or under a staircase. Keep the space clean, and avoid storing shoes or clutter nearby.
Number of idols
A single Ganesha in the mandir is enough. Some traditions recommend not keeping more than one of the same deity in the same space.
The most important rule
Devotion and cleanliness matter more than any compass reading. Keep the idol clean, light a lamp, and offer a prayer daily.
