What to Buy on Dhanteras: Brass, Lakshmi and Kuber Pieces
by TOHFA · 4 Oct 2026
Dhanteras opens the Diwali festival. The day is associated with Dhanvantari, Lakshmi and Kuber, and by tradition it is when families buy something new, most often in metal.
Why metal?
Buying gold, silver or a metal utensil on Dhanteras is a long-standing custom, understood as welcoming prosperity into the home. Many families who do not buy gold choose a brass, copper or steel vessel or lamp instead. Customs vary, and there is no single rule, so choose what suits your budget and your home.
Brass pieces that suit the day
A Kuber idol. Kuber is the keeper of wealth and is worshipped on Dhanteras by many business families.
A Lakshmi or Lakshmi Ganesha idol. The pair most households install for the Diwali puja.
An Ashtlakshmi lota. A vessel with the eight forms of Lakshmi worked into it, used for water on the puja thali or for the kalash.
Brass diyas and lamps. A new lamp lit on Dhanteras evening is a simple way to mark the day.
