Akhand jyot
An akhand jyot is a lamp kept burning without a break for the nine nights of Navratri, lit on the first day after the kalash is established. It is traditionally fed with ghee (some families use oil) and is seen as a continuing offering to the goddess. Not every family keeps one, and it is a personal vow, so do it only if you can look after it properly.
The evening diya
For Diwali, and for ordinary evenings through the year, a smaller diya is lit at dusk in front of the deity, at the entrance and around the house.
Why brass
Brass holds heat evenly, is stable and heavy enough not to tip easily, and it polishes back after the soot. Brass diyas and oil lamps are used in homes for generations.
