Griha Pravesh Puja Samagri and Idols: A Simple New Home List
by TOHFA · 9 Oct 2026
A Griha Pravesh puja marks the first entry into a new home. The details differ by region, family and priest, so treat this as a practical starting list and confirm the specifics with the person who is conducting your puja.
The idols
Most families install Ganesha first, as the remover of obstacles, usually with Lakshmi. A Lakshmi Ganesha pair is the common choice. If the family also worships Saraswati, a Lakshmi Ganesha Saraswati set covers all three.
The kalash
A kalash, a pot of water topped with mango leaves and a coconut, is central to many ceremonies. A brass lota or an Ashtlakshmi lota is used for this and can later stay in the puja room.
Lamps
A diya for the main puja, and a few more to light at the entrance and in each room on the first evening. Ghee or oil with cotton wicks is traditional. A tall brass lamp can be placed in the puja corner.
Other items usually gathered
Flowers and garlands, rice, kumkum and turmeric, incense, camphor, fruit and sweets for the offering, mango leaves for the door, and a clean cloth for the seat. Your priest may add a havan kit and other items.
A tip for the day
Clean the home, set up the puja space the day before, and keep the idols wiped and ready. Having everything arranged in advance keeps the day calm.
After the ceremony
The idols stay in the home's puja corner. Brass pieces are well suited for this because they last, and a simple wipe keeps them bright.
