How to Do Aarti at Home: Steps, Meaning and the Right Diya

Aarti is the part of puja where a lit lamp is waved in front of the deity while a devotional song is sung. It is often the most joyful part of worship and the part that children enjoy most. It is simple to do at home.
What you need
A lamp with a ghee or oil wick, or a few lit cotton wicks, a bell, and a plate or thali. Incense and camphor are sometimes included. The aarti song itself, such as Om Jai Jagdish Hare or Jai Ganesh Deva, is sung together.
Steps
Light the lamp and ring the bell. Stand before the deity, and with your right hand wave the lamp in a slow clockwise circle, with the deity at the centre. Traditionally the lamp goes around the whole image, and then the feet, the face and the whole form. Sing the aarti. When it ends, offer a short prayer.
Taking the aarti
After the aarti, devotees pass their palms over the flame and then touch their eyes and head. This is a way of receiving the blessing of the deity. Offer the prasad afterwards.
What the elements mean
The lamp stands for light that removes darkness. The bell is said to call the attention of the deity and to dispel distractions. The circle shows that the divine is at the centre of life.
Choosing the lamp
A brass diya with a handle or a broad base is easy to hold. A peacock diya is attractive, and a tall brass lamp is used in more formal settings. Choose one that is not too hot to hold, and take care with the flame.
A reminder on safety
Keep long sleeves and dupattas away from the flame, and keep children at a safe distance when the lamp is lit.
