Idols for the Office Desk: What to Keep and How to Keep It Respectfully
by TOHFA · 9 Oct 2026
Many people keep a small deity at work, a quiet reminder in a busy day. If you want one on your desk, a few simple choices make it easy.
Which deity
Ganesha is the most popular, as the remover of obstacles. Lakshmi Ganesha is common for those in business or finance. Hanuman is chosen by those who seek strength and courage. Saraswati suits teachers, students and creative professionals.
Size and format
A desk has little space, so a small figure, 2 to 4 inches tall, or a foldable pocket temple works well. A pocket temple closes when not in use, which is helpful in a shared office where you may prefer privacy.
Material
A small polyresin Ganesha is very affordable. A brass piece is heavier, which keeps it stable, and it ages gracefully.
Respectful placement
Keep the deity on a clean cloth or a small stand, away from food, papers and the keyboard. Many people place it so that it faces them, at eye level or slightly above, on the north or east of the desk.
Be mindful of colleagues
In a shared or multi-faith workplace, a small and discreet piece is better than a large display. A pocket temple that folds is a good option.
A small ritual
A short prayer when you sit down, or a flower on Thursdays and Tuesdays, takes a minute. The routine matters more than the size of the idol.
