Lord Kuber: The Divine Treasurer and the Tradition of Dhanteras

Where Goddess Lakshmi bestows wealth, Lord Kuber is its guardian — the divine treasurer of the cosmos. Households and traders have long remembered him at Dhanteras, the first day of Diwali, when it is traditional to bring something new home in metal.

How Kuber is depicted

The idol shows him holding his signature money purse, alongside a mongoose vomiting gems — a symbol that wealth, rightly held, flows outward as generosity as much as it flows in.

Where to place him

Following Vastu tradition, Kuber is placed in the North zone of a home, shop or office, the direction associated with him. Many families keep the idol near the place where accounts or savings are kept, and light a diya before him on Dhanteras and Diwali.

More than money

The older teaching is that Kuber's blessing is stability and uninterrupted livelihood, not excess. Honest work, honest dealing and a share given to others are what keep the treasury full.
