Moving Into a New Home Before Diwali: A Puja Essentials Checklist
by TOHFA · 4 Oct 2026
Moving into a new home close to Diwali is considered by many families to be especially auspicious, as you are inviting Lakshmi into a house that has just been prepared. It is also busy. This checklist helps you cover the essentials. Follow your own family's customs and your priest's advice for the Griha Pravesh itself.
Before you move
Clean the new home thoroughly.
Check the panchang, or ask your priest, for an auspicious date and time for entry.
Decide where the puja corner will be.
Puja essentials checklist
1. A Lakshmi Ganesha idol or frame, the centre of the Diwali puja.
2. A brass lota or kalash, for water and for the kalash at entry. The Ashtlakshmi lota is a popular choice for housewarmings.
3. A brass oil lamp for the prayer corner, and diyas for the entrance and the rooms.
