Travelling Home for Diwali: How to Carry Your Puja with You
by TOHFA · 4 Oct 2026
Not everyone spends Diwali at home. Students are in hostels, professionals are in rented flats, and many people are on the road in the festival rush. A puja does not have to be skipped because the mandir is far away.
A foldable pocket temple
A pocket temple is a photo frame of a deity that folds flat for the bag and opens into a small altar when you stand it on a shelf or a desk. It is light and takes up almost no space. Ganesha, Lakshmi Ganesha, Hanuman and Lakshmi Ganesha Saraswati are the most popular choices.
Setting up a corner anywhere
You need very little:
A clean, raised spot, such as a shelf or a corner of the desk
A cloth to lay beneath
Your pocket temple
A small diya, or a battery lamp if open flames are not allowed

A flower, if you can find one, and a sweet to offer
A note on hostels and rentals
Check the rules about open flames. Many hostels do not allow them, and a battery diya is a perfectly good alternative.
While travelling
Wrap the frame in a soft cloth and keep it in a bag where it will not be pressed. On arrival, stand it up, light your lamp if you can and say a prayer.
For a gift
A pocket temple is also a thoughtful Diwali gift for someone who is away from home, because it lets them keep the festival with them.
Wherever you are, the lamp, the prayer and the intention are what matter.
