Cleaning the brass in the house is part of preparing for Diwali in many families. Done gently, it brings the metal back to a warm shine. Done roughly, it can scratch or dull the finish, so here is a careful approach.
First, check the finish
Plain polished brass can be cleaned with the methods below.
Lacquered brass has a clear protective coating. Do not scrub it or use acids. Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it.
Gold or silver plated pieces, such as our pan-shaped photo frames, should only be wiped with a soft dry or barely damp cloth. Scrubbing can wear the plating.
If you are unsure, test a small hidden spot first.
Gentle cleaning methods for plain brass
1. Lemon and salt. Cut a lemon, dip it in a little salt and rub the surface lightly. Rinse well.
2. Tamarind. Soak tamarind pulp in warm water and use the paste with a soft cloth. A traditional method that works well on diyas and lotas.

3. Vinegar and salt or baking soda. Make a paste, apply it, leave it for a few minutes and wipe off. Rinse well.
Detail work
A soft toothbrush will reach into folds, petals and the fine lines of an idol. Do not use steel wool or harsh scourers, which leave scratches.
Rinse and dry thoroughly
Acids left on the surface will darken the brass again. Rinse with clean water and dry completely with a soft cloth, including inside any hollow base.
A lamp that has been used
Wipe off excess oil and soot with a cloth before cleaning, and let the diya cool completely first.
Do not over-clean
A little patina is natural and many people like it. Polish only as much as you want to.
