Natural Ways to Clean Tarnished Brass: Lemon, Tamarind and What to Avoid

Brass naturally darkens as it reacts with air, moisture and the oils from our hands. The good news is that it cleans easily at home with items from the kitchen. These methods are common and widely used, and a gentle approach always works better than a harsh one.
First, a gentle wash
Start with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap. Use a soft cloth or a soft brush and rinse. This removes oil and dust, and for lightly dull brass this may be enough.
Lemon and salt
Cut a lemon, dip it in a little salt and rub it gently over the surface. Leave it for a minute or two, and rinse and dry well. This is quick and works on light tarnish.
Tamarind
Soak a ball of tamarind in warm water, and rub the paste on the brass with a soft brush or cloth. Tamarind has been used for generations to polish puja vessels. Rinse and dry well.
Vinegar and salt
Mix a little salt into white vinegar and apply it with a cloth. Leave it for a few minutes, then wash off. Do not leave vinegar on for long.
Detailed idols
Use a soft toothbrush to reach crevices, and be patient. Do not scrub hard on fine detail.
What to avoid
Harsh abrasive powders, steel wool and strong chemical cleaners can scratch brass or strip its finish. Some idols have a lacquer or an oxidised finish that is meant to remain, and strong cleaners remove it. If the piece has a finish, wipe it with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth only.
Dry thoroughly
Water left on brass leaves spots. Dry with a clean soft cloth, and let it air-dry fully before putting it back.
