Once the lamps have burned down, it is tempting to put everything away at once. A little care at this stage keeps your brass in good condition for the next festival.
Let the lamps cool
Never clean or wrap a lamp that is still warm. Let each diya and lamp cool completely.
Remove oil and soot
Wipe off excess oil and ghee with a soft cloth or a paper towel, and clean away soot with a little mild soapy water. Old oil left in a lamp turns rancid and can stain the brass.
Clean gently

Dry completely
