A home mandir is the quiet centre of the household. It does not need to be large; it needs to be clean, calm and cared for. These are the traditional guidelines many families follow.
Where to place it
Many families place the mandir in the north-east corner of the home, and arrange it so that the person praying faces east or north. Keep it in a clean, quiet, well-lit spot, away from the bathroom wall and from clutter. Where space is limited, a shelf in the living room is perfectly good; what matters is the devotion, not the size.
What to keep in it
One or two main deities. Ganesha and Lakshmi are the most common choices, and a Lakshmi Ganesha pair is a popular first idol.

A lamp or diya, lit each morning and evening. A brass lamp is sturdy and long-lasting.
A lota or small vessel for water. An Ashtlakshmi lota is an auspicious choice.
Incense, flowers and a small bell, and a clean cloth or asan to place beneath the deities.
Daily care
Wipe the shelf and the idols each morning, and change the flowers.
Light the diya, offer water and a simple prayer.
Polish the brass periodically. See our guide on cleaning brass idols and puja items.
A few simple customs
Keep the mandir tidy and avoid storing unrelated items in it.
Remove your footwear before approaching it.
Do not overcrowd it. A few deities that you pray to daily are better than many that go unattended.
Start with the essentials
A Lakshmi Ganesha idol, a brass lamp, an Ashtlakshmi lota and a peacock diya are a lovely foundation for a new mandir, and make a thoughtful Griha Pravesh gift.
Customs differ from family to family and region to region, so follow what your own elders practise. The rest is simple: a clean space, a lit lamp and a sincere heart.
